Bernie_pointing_sticksBernie Schallehn has been a drummer/percussionist since the age of 12. A groove player, from the early 1970s to the present he has performed with countless bands and solo artists. He is a versatile drummer and percussionist, proficient in most forms of music. A partial list of styles includes: Rock, Classic Country, Country Rock, Alternative Country, Americana, Progressive/Modern Country, Roots Rock, Southern Rock, Jazz, R&B, Funk, Blues, Top 40, Standards, Cocktail, Commercial, and wedding and party music. His venues have included nightclubs, private parties and coffeehouses, as well as the concert stage for a U.S. Vice President and performing as the opening act for The Dropkick Murphys.

Schallehn has studied drumkit in workshops with Kenny Aronoff, Kenwood Dennard, Walfredo Reyes, Jr., Jim Chapin, Dom Famularo, and the late Nashville great, Larrie Londin. His hand percussion instructors include Richie Flores, Memo Acevedo, Brian Melick, Kalani, and Candido Camera. Bernie is proficient in congas, bongos, cajon, djembe, darbouka, shaker, bodhran, udu, tambourine, riq, caxixi, guiro, and Tibetan singing bowl.

He received Drum Circle certification from Dr. Barry Bittman and Christine Stevens though the REMO Health Rhythms program.

Schallehn is a columnist and contributing writer for Modern Drummer magazine (MIND MATTERS) and was a contributor to Classic Drummer magazine. In addition to his column in Modern Drummer, he also writes freelance articles, product reviews, and conducts artist interviews for the publication.

He was commissioned by Modern Drummer magazine to write a book based on his “Mind Matters” column. Publication date was Sept. 2011. Sales of MIND MATTERS: OVERCOMING COMMON MENTAL BARRIERS IN DRUMMING (Modern Drummer Publications) continue to be brisk.

From 2009 to 2011, Schallehn served as a judge at the Albany-based Guitar Center’s annual Drum-Off.Bernie_Mardi_Gras_gig

Bernie has experience in the recording studio, having played on a number of CDs. He is also on several independent film soundtracks—both percussion and Foley artist work.

He and his wife live in a small village at the base of a mountain range in Upstate New York.
