Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and now can be found in Boston. He was just three years old the first time his father sat him behind a set of drums. This began an obsession with drums and music that has led him to tour internationally, record in studios across the nation, teach students, and enjoy every minute of it.
Gavin’s earliest drumming influences were Chris Frantz, Peter Criss and Manu Katche’s work with Peter Gabriel. In his adolescence Gavin became obsessed with prog rock drummers. He would spend days at a time learning parts by masters like Neil Peart, Bill Bruford, Phil Collins, and anyone who played with Frank Zappa. Meanwhile, Gavin had also been playing drums in school, by his senior year of high school, Gavin was playing in the symphonic and jazz bands at San Leandro High School, taking two symphonic band courses at Chabot Junior College, taking random studio and live gigs around the San Francisco Bay Area, and playing in bands with his high school friends.
He then went to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he had the privilege of studying with such excellent drummers like Mike Mangini (Dream Theater, Steve Vai), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Winger, Jordan Rudess), and Kenwood Dennard (Miles Davis, Sting, George Clinton)
While at Berklee, Gavin recorded and gigged with several projects. He also joined the indie art rock group Bent Knee, which he has been with now since 2010. They have written and recorded 2 albums and extensively toured North America.
Now Gavin can be found on stage or in the studio with Bent Knee, Mr. Gavin’s Meat Farm, Justice Cow, or Ben Levin Group. He can also be found teaching private students, and generally drinking too much coffee.
