Jeff Sorenson, a native of Sturtevant, WI, started playing drums at age eleven, playing professionally with local and regional bands in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas. By sixteen, he had already played with many multi-platinum groups and artists. To further his music education, he attended the University of North Texas’ College of Music on scholarship. He became adept at performing and recording with artists across genres, including Rock, Country, Funk, R&B, Pop, Latin, and Jazz.
Since childhood, Jeff has considered Dave Weckl to be one of his greatest inspirations and has even studied with him. Dave’s musical approach to drumming and contemporary style shaped him along with master drummers such as Steve Gadd, Jim Keltner, Frankie Dunlop, Gregg Bissonette, and Paul Liem. These influential individuals created a fluid versatility and contemporary approach to Jeff’s drumming style.
Jeff moved from Texas to California in May of 2005, where he formed the Los Angeles rock band SomebodySomeone. They put out an EP in late 2005 produced by Jorge Vivo (Puddle of Mudd, Sum 41, Josh Groban and Michael Buble).
He has accompanied such diverse acts as Chadwick, The Rex Merriweather Big Band, Kristen Tedmand, Dawson’s New Rage and August Emile just to name a few. Jeff was an in house drummer for Pongamoosic studios in North Hollywood, working with Gerry Cohen and Steve Petit recording music for Television, Movies and Commercials.
As a studio musician, Jeff has recorded with such producers as David Foster, Randy Spendlove, Jorge Vivo, Shane Mack and Pete Anderson.
Jeff is currently the drummer for the country band Dawson’s Gang and toured nationally with the jazz-based blues band The Pete Anderson Trio from 2012-13. He also plays regularly with The Rob Staley Band, The Jimmy Nelson Band, and alt-rock group Dead Letter Perfect. When he’s not gigging, Jeff’s teaches privately and at Join the Band school in Los Angeles.
He’s also the Host and Creator of Drumsmack TV with Jeff Sorenson, which airs every Tuesday at 9 PM PST on the internet TV station TradioV (www.tradiov.com). Since 2013, Jeff has been interviewing the top drummers in the business, including such greats as Peter Erskine, James Gadson, Adrian Young, Thomas Lang, and his childhood hero, Dave Weckl.
Jeff is endorsed by Rich Sticks, who has created signature Jeff Sorenson drumsticks. An official Drumsmack Practice Pad will be manufactured by E-PAD in 2014.
