Simon Cooper

Simon Cooper 1Simon Cooper – Although I started learning to play the drums at the age of 6, I became hooked on music ever since watching Status Quo open Live Aid in 1985 from my highchair when I was 2!

I have performed as a live drummer for over 20 years

The opportunity to receive tuition from top drum coaches since the age of 6 has refined my performance skills to be an intuitively accurate and disciplined drummer.

Notably I was taught by Rick Finlay, renowned as a drummer and percussionist for a number of major West End shows; in particular Blood Brothers.

Besides teaching me to read drum music, Rick also taught me the finer points of playing.

By the age of 9, I had played solo many times in front of my entire school. This was the end of year treat for many years.

I joined Chickenshed Theatre when I was 12 years old where almost immediately I was drafted into the main house band as a drummer/percussionist working alongside Liz Kitchen (Drums/Percussion), Julian Stringle (Sax/Clarinet) amongst others.

Liz Kitchen also passed on many tips on how to play in production situations which was very different to other ‘gigs’ I had played before and I was able to enhance my skills in studio and production environments.

By the age of 15 I started my own rock band called The Difference which regularly played at London clubs and venues.

As well as playing in main house shows, my experience also extends to writing and recording.

I began taking private lessons in recording and production which has led me on to running a recording studio. I am fully conversant with Logic Pro and drum programming. I can also play Guitar, and Bass Guitar

I have been very lucky to work with some very talented people, not only on the musical side, but also with directors, choreographers, musical directors and artists such as Elaine Paige, Sir Cliff Richard, Chas Hodges, Bob Hoskins, Sam Brown, Julian Littman (We Will Rock You), Dennis Haines (Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army), Dave Carey (The Hollies), and Richard O’Brien (Rocky Horror Show) to mention but a few.

Apart from my professional drumming career which has largely been based in theatres, I have performed in bands of all varieties and performed countless concerts at some of Europe’s largest and sometimes most exclusive venues. In July 2005 legend has it that I was the first drummer to play at 10 Downing Street on Tony Blair’s birthday.

In 2009 I was one of 582 drummers to break the world record for “the largest complete drum kit ensemble” under the name “Stick it to MS” which raised over £65,000 for the MS Society.

Since 2009 I have been playing drums with Chas and His Band & Chas n Dave across the country and a small clip of this can be seen on the Audio/Video page.

During 2013 I will be performing some shows with Steve Rodgers, Supporting the Deborah Bonham Band, Chas n Dave and new Pop/Rock band Chasing Envy. Check the “Gigs” page for updated gig information.
