KISS made me want to be in a band, but Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) made me want to be a drummer. The first time I heard “War Pigs” I was hooked. So I pestered my parents for drums every birthday and Christmas for the next four years, to no avail. In the meantime my older brother and sister supplied me with a steady diet of Deep Purple, Zeppelin , Judas Priest, Scorpions, AC/DC, UFO, Rush, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Pat Traverse, Edgar Winter, Blue Oyster Cult, Budgie, Moxy, …. I could go on and on. At age eleven I finally got a set of old, beat up Ruethers (Sears Catalog) by trading an older kid from my neighborhood a BMX bike. I spent as much time repairing these things as I did learning to play them. Once I finally got where I could keep a beat, a friend of mine, Ben Nunez, that was also learning to play guitar, would come over, and we would proceed to play “Smoke on the Water”, RELENTLESSLY! I am sure my neighbors loved us for this.
Fast forward to age fifteen. I am now ingesting all the Ratt, Motley Crue. Accept, Dokken, and of course Iron Maiden that I can get my hands on. I have formed a band with like-minded individuals, and we are trying to force it on audiences (bars, local parties, school functions) who want to hear Duran Duran, Culture Club, and Haircut One Hundred. Very few seemed to share our love of this new form of “metal”. Then overnight everyone loved what we were doing. So we enjoyed the benefits of being the local band that was suddenly playing what everyone in the clubs wanted to hear, while the other bands tried their best to play “catch-up”. About the time our audience caught up to what we were doing, I discovered Motorhead, Metallica, Anthrax , Slayer, Testament , Megadeth, Wrathchild America, and of course the still unsigned Pantera. So obviously double Kick became very integral in my playing. And as a young player I quickly embraced the “More is Better” Philosophy. I’ve matured since then, a little.
By 1986 Music is my full time job….I’ve joined a cover / original band from Louisiana that is playing a club circuit that covers most of Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. But bands, as we know, will fall apart, doors close, and other doors open… By 1989 I find myself in Los Angeles in a band signed to Metal Blade Records. Over the next twenty years I play in many, many bands, Some you have heard of, and some you have not.
I consider myself blessed because I always managed to make a living doing what I love. I plan on playing music until I can no longer hold the sticks. And I wish the same for everyone who loves to play music.
