Garrett Cameron – Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and private music instructor, Garrett Cameron, has been playing music since he was 8, starting off on drum set and quickly moving to guitar, bass, piano, banjo uke and alto saxophone, among many others. Garrett’s gigging career started when he was 13, playing drums in bands as varied as a blues trio, a funk-rock group, and a youth service band, and playing guitar in a Latin-influenced classic rock cover band.
Throughout the years of his upbringing in Ohio, Garrett performed with and played in a wide variety of groups, playing percussion and marching percussion while in school, viola in the Lima Area Youth Orchestra, drum set in jazz combos, and piano in different ensembles. In 2009, Garrett studied music composition at Cleveland State University under Dr. Andrew Rindfleisch and Dr. Gregory D’Alessio, jazz drum set under Bill Ransom, and jazz saxophone under John Perrine.
While at Cleveland State, Garrett continued to explore other instruments, playing marimba and saxophone in different ensembles. He cofounded the group Duo Approximate with pianist and composer James Praznik during this time as well, creating half-improvised/half-composed scores to silent films. Duo Approximate has been a featured performer at Cleveland’s Ingenuity Fest and has appeared on NPR and PBS for their involvement in a project with NASA researcher Dr. Matt Melis.
After studying at Cleveland State, Garrett continued playing and teaching in the Cleveland area, most notably sharing the stage with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey while playing drum set in the prog-rock group Orrery.
In 2012, Garrett moved to New Hampshire and has been here (for the most part) since. While in New Hampshire, he has become active in the Scottish, Irish, and New England traditional music scene, playing banjo uke and low whistle for contra dances and at various sessions. He also performs on other instruments, playing solo jazz saxophone and folk guitar acts, playing and subbing on drum set for blues trios, rock groups, and jazz combos, and playing bass for dance-funk-rock cover bands, as well as teaching private music lessons on an array of instruments.
