Musicians they say are born to play. Some never grace the grand stages of the world, and spend years honing their craft in honkytonks and backwoods dives. For Paul Chris, it’s the ability to balance the two worlds that feeds his desires. For Paul, it’s not the size of the stage that interests him, it’s the ability to be a true journeyman drummer, and work six and seven nights a week that brings a smile to this lifelong Texan’s face.
Paul Chris spent his formative years growing up around music. All of his mentors were full time musicians, and from as early as he can remember, that was the only life he longed for. His musical background stems from playing various styles of music such as, Country, Classic Rock, Cajun, Zydeco, Polish, Czech & German, Funk, R&B, Blues.
Paul was currently awarded the 2017 “Joe DeLeon Drummer of the Year” award by the Country Music Association of Texas. The award name was changed last year. Paul is currently celebrating his 5th year of working with Texas country singing/songwriter artist Jody Booth.
Though his 25+ years of musicianship has brought him many accolades and memories, his highlight reel includes working the road with such National acts as Doug Supernaw, Johnny Rodriquez, Jo-El Sonnier, Rick Trevino, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Byrd and Texas artists David Glenn, Jason Allen, Todd Fritsch, Josh Ward & Zona Jones.
Although, while playing his current artist is Jody Booth. Paul keeps a very busy schedule by working with other local & regional artist such as: Jason Allen, Josh Ward, Randy Meadows, Jesse Raub Jr., David Glenn, Darwin Macon, Susan Hickman, Freddie Pate, & Cooper Wade. He plays anywhere from 200-250 dates a year plus session work.
Working with his longtime friend Doug Deforest, Paul realized early on the need for a mobile protools studio in the Houston, Texas area where he calls home. Paul studied under Deforest and learned, and soon became not only a sought after session drummer, but a first rate studio engineer. Paul uses his skills to capture some of the Southwest’s greatest groups, including Donnie Simmons & the House rockers, Houston’s premier live Texas boogie band.
Paul recently served as an engineer on Susan Hickman’s debut CD, which garnered six first round Grammy nominations in 2009, including best album. This only increased the demand for Paul’s talents, and moved him to the forefront among engineers in the southwest.
As a drummer, Paul Chris has graced the stage of most every major venue in the U.S., including the Grizzly Rose in Denver, CO; Cactus Pete’s in Jackpot, NV; The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; The Pasadena Rodeo Show in Pasadena, TX; The Texas State Fair and many many more. Along besides the US, he has toured in the last 5- 10 years Japan, South America, France and the Caribbean.
Known for his professionalism and courteous nature, Paul Chris is a plus for any band. Paul loves working with everyone, and is known as a “go to” guy whenever someone needs a master drummer or percussionist. Besides Rich Sticks, Paul currently endorses & has endorsements with: 7drums Custom Drum Co. / San Antonio, TX & Soultone Cymbals / Los Angeles, CA.
One thing is for sure, Paul Chris will always give you the back beat. And as Paul says, “The groove you can use”.
